Books

In my choice of legal terminology, I rely first and foremost on the terminology database of the EU, Eurodicautom [link]. On the whole, "Euro speak" is, of course, not the same as British or American English, but it does have a nice ring to it. I also have a large collection of useful books. Below, you will find those which I use most frequently.

Specialist dictionaries

Juridisch Lexicon, A. van den End
In my opinion, this is very helpful, especially if you are not familiar with the correct terminology yourself. However, the writer specifically rejected drawing on British English or American English. His choices may therefore sound foreign/unnatural to British and American lawyers. I prefer to try and find terms which sound natural to English readers. I rely on my own knowledge (a British law degree, see: Profile) and the database of the EU (Eurodicautom: link) to achieve this. For me, the Juridisch Lexicon does, however, constitute a helpful supplement to this knowledge.

Financieel-Economisch Lexicon, A.I. de Keizer
On the whole very good, but also certainly not the only and definitive authority in this field. I often cross check with (Eurodicautom: link) and the Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms, Barron, I bought in London.

Oxford Dictionary of Law
In the Netherlands, I find that translators and lawyers often rely on Black's Law Dictionary, which is oriented to American law. I myself prefer to use the British equivalent, the Oxford Dictionary of Law.

English and Dutch law books

In addition, I have several books on English law, some from the days that I studied law and some acquired on later trips to London. I also have books on Dutch law, because I am studying Dutch law at the OU.

General and German

General dictionaries

Van Dale, Dutch into English and vice versa, a thesaurus and the New Oxford Dictionary of English.

German into English

I have a Collins dictionary, I rely on a number of internet resources and, on occasion, German colleagues.
